Mini Project #1 - Adam Crystal

I don't think that we are all itching to be on reality TV shows. I
think the people that go on these shows do it for one of two reason.
There are those that actually have talents (like some of the American
Idol contestants) and reality shows are probably the best way to show
one's talent and get it out there to a mass audience. On the other
hand, I believe there are those that just want to be famous and be on
TV. Some of these people may actually think they are talented but a lot
of themjust want to be on these shows just to say they were on the show and have their fifteen minutes.

I interviewed my two roommates who don't really watch much reality TV
but also my friend, Rachel who loves them. Despite the differences in
the watching habits of these subjects, they seem to agree about their
feelings towards those who appear on these reality shows. They see most
of these people as attention-starved, star-crazy, dreamers, who believe
that they have some sort of talent or should be famous when in reality
they aren't or don'thave any particular talent. There are occasionally those few who really do have a talent and I think this sort of "diamond in the rough" or "that could be me" idea is what reason ates
with the public. But for the most part, those who appear on reality
shows seem to have an ulterior motive such the pursuit of fame just for
fame's sake or perhaps the reality show will be a springboard for a
future career in Hollywood or whatever.
Not everyone is itching to
be on a reality show. Most people like to watch others on TV or be
entertained by these reality shows. I don'tknow how many people
actually want to be on these shows. I would think that most people
would be too nervous to go on TV or even would want to put themselves
in a situation where they can be embarrassed which is often the case.
There are always those people who want to be on TV no matter what the
cost is and I think these are the people who actively go out, and wait
on tremendously lines just to possibly audition to get on one ofthese shows. These reality shows just provide another outlet for people to attempt to get their
fifteen minutes of fame, but through reality shows these attempts are
for the entertainment of those watching at home, whether the reality
show contestant likes the outcome or not.
I'm not sure that
everyone is itching to become a reality show contestant but there are
definitely those that see these shows as an opportunity to fulfill some
sort of goal or dream. One who appears on these shows can't say that
their fame or experience was an accident because they had to actively
go out and tryout for these shows and in some way, big or small, these
people had a reason to go on these shows and believed that they were
going to get something out of this experience. Whether that experience
leads to a successful career, or just to make someone infamous, there
is a reason people go onthese shows, but for the most part I don't believe that the general
public has an itch or need to go on these shows, but that it is a
select minority that have the desire to be on these types of reality
shows.
