Mini project#1: Kristofer Dorsey
When it comes to people actually want to be famous, I believe that it is a 50/50 concept. I believe that some people want to be rich, but not be famous or be both rich and famous. The only that that glues it together is the idea of wealth. During my investigation on the topic of reality shows, I received both views to the idea of being famous for being “real.”
Question #1: Do you think we're all (people) just itching to appear on a reality show?
I asked four people this question and the answers were basically spit down the middle. Those in favor believed that people use reality shows to launch other careers, become famous, or use it to just be known so that they could become famous. The latter believes that not everybody wants to be famous, but rather wealthy or be the one in control (or behind the scenes) of this chaotic world of reality show television and becoming famous.
Question #2: What do you think about the folks who do appear on these shows?
The answer for this question was all over board. One felt that people who are picked for reality shows are dramatic, confrontational, extreme, but by no means were acting. Some of the people that have participated in reality TV have used this opportunity to become actors. The other felt it was for publicity for other things. The last radical thought was that the people were stupid and idiots and used the example of the women that were on VH1’s “The Flavor of Love.”
Question #3: Would you be on a reality series?
The answer for this question was also split down the middle. One felt adamantly enough to answer me “Hell no.” I think we could tell how that person feels about that. Another felt that they were fake and had nothing to do with talent like they did with game shows such as The Gong Shows and others. The person said that they would only participate in one if it was “So You Think You Can Dance?” They felt that it took talent to actually be on there. One said no originally, but once I told them that they get paid in the end, the person changed their mine. Last one said they would without having to bribe with the idea of getting paid.
As I said in the opening statement, I don’t feel that everyone wants to be famous, but that possibly in this culture it’s 50/50 or leans a little more to one side. The only thing that glues everything together is wealth. America was built on the dollar and so was reality shows. It’s the only thing that keeps us going and keeps reality shows rolling out every season.
